NC Department of State Treasurer and Open AI Announce AI Pilot

North Carolina State Treasurer Brad Briner and OpenAI today announced a pilot program to use artificial intelligence to improve government services for the people of North Carolina. Over the next 12 weeks, the Department of State Treasurer (DST) and OpenAI will explore ways to safely and responsibly use ChatGPT in combination with publicly available data to increase operational efficiency and enhance public service delivery to North Carolina’s residents.

“Innovation, particularly around data and technology, will allow our department to deliver better results for North Carolina,” said Treasurer Briner. “I am grateful to our friends at OpenAI for partnering with us on this new endeavor, and I am excited to explore the possibilities ahead.”

This first of its kind partnership will utilize artificial intelligence to enhance the way that the Department conducts business, discover process improvements, and ensure that DST is delivering the best possible results for our state. DST and OpenAI are exploring several use cases to deploy artificial intelligence effectively, including the ability to identify businesses with unclaimed property and analyzing local government public financial data. Employees will receive support and guidance on how they should use the tool as they explore other potential use cases.

The Department of State Treasurer will share learnings and results of the pilot program after its conclusion. Treasurer Briner and Open AI are excited to explore opportunities to use technology to streamline government operations and make the DST better at delivering results to our customers.
